Thomas Allen Harris was born in Bronx, The United States, but he was raised in Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania. Harris attended Harvard and graduated with a degree in Biology. Yet from there began a career as a Broadcast journalist. He worked at WNET/ Thirteen producing public affair shows for 5 years. He then began to teach at the University of California as an Associate Professor of Media Arts for eight years beginning in 1994. In between this works he makes his films in The United states as well as in South Africa.

His movies are mostly about the African life, which exists in The United States as well as the racism, which has always been in The USA against the Africans. As such Harris is working in a variety of styles including autobiographical narrative and documentary, independent videomaking. Thomas Harris explores issues of gender, identity, racial prejudice, and homosexual desire in starkly poignant and visually beautiful works.
