Runa Islam was born in 1970, in Daka, Bangladesh. Studied Art History , Philosophy and after that, made a studio residency at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She works with film and videoinstallation, and her principal subject is the nature of film in itself, examinating its narrative structure and its relation to reality. She analyses the technology we have invented to most closely approximate human visual mechanisms, recreating cinematic moments of enchantment and disclose the artificial, constructing nature of filmmaking itself. Runa Islam makes films about how we experience time, which more nearly approaches the poetics of life more as it is lived, than a formalist or synthetic realist approach to filmmaking can perhaps manage alone. Islam install films in architectural configurations, frequently presenting them across two or three screens as a framing device.
