Roger Welch is a conceptual artist working in a variety of media including sculpture, watercolor and photography. He has done several widely acclaimed installation art works which combine sculpture, video and film.

Since the 1970's, Roger Welch?s video and installation works have been shown in museums and galleries worldwide. Most recently, last May, an installation was exhibited at the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art in China. His work is found in many distinguished collections including the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. His video works, video and film installations, photo works and sculptures have also appeared in numerous publications and anthologies such as "Installation Art". Welch?s installations, in particular, are known for being among the first to combine video, film and sculpture in a singular artistic statement. His work most often focuses on time, personal history and memory.

His 1974 video installation, "The Niagara Falls Project", was the most technically advanced video and film art installation of its time, combining a 35mm Panavision film shot from a helicopter with 2? broadcast video together with a mirror surfaced sculpture. Based on the experience of a boy who went over Niagara Falls and survived, the work included his video interview with the survivor 14 years later and a spectacular wide-screen film flying 20 ft from the surface of the Niagara River following it?s length to the brink and abyss of the Falls.

Another installation from the 1970?s. the Multi Screen ?The O.J. Simpson Project? was originally exhibited in 1976 at the Albright Knox in Buffalo and was purchased by the Reina Sofia Museum in 2006. Welch continues to make single channel video works, one of which, ?Hudson River? was exhibited last month at the Kinz, Tillou, + Feigen Gallery

Roger Welch received his BFA from Miami University (Ohio) in 1969 and MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1971. He was awarded National Endowment Grants in 1974 and 1980 and New York State Council on the Arts Grants in 1973 and 1976.

In 1972, he had his first gallery one-person exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery in Paris and, in 1974, had his first solo museum exhibition at the Milwaukee Art Museum. In 1980 he had a retrospective of his work at Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City and was the first artist from the United States to have a one-person exhibition at the Museo Nacional in Havana, Cuba. In 1982 he exhibited "Drive-In: Second Feature" at the Whitney Museum. His work has also appeared in two "Documenta" exhibitions in Kassel, Germany. In 2001, he had a one-person exhibition at the Neuberger Museum in Purchase. In 2005 he exhibited work at the Museum of Modern Art in St. Etienne, France and in 2006/2007 at the Reina Sofia Museum in Spain. Throughout the 1980's and 90's he taught as a visiting professor of art at numerous colleges and universities including the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Roger Welch lives and works in New York.

Welch is one of the founders of the "Narrative Art" movement along with John Baldessari, William Wegman and others. He is also a pioneer in exploring personal memory and identity as an art form.
His works are included in many museum collections including the Guggenheim Museum , the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Georgia Museum of Art, Musée de Saint Etienne in France, and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City.
