One of the founders of the italian movement Arte Povera, with Giuseppe Penone and Michelangelo Pistoletto. Arte Povera tried to cut the dicotomy between art and life mostly in happenings and sculptures made of common materials.
Always close to abstract expresionism, Merz developed different common life objects as motives of all his work. One of the most famous, the Igloo. Igloos in different sizes and made of different materials are part of a search that ended in impressive installations.
