The athletic superstar turned from comedy to swashbucklers in 1920. Fairbanks controlled all aspects of his pictures. The Thief of Bagdad was a colossal hit in 1924, as was The Black Pirate in Technicolor in 1926. He loved the silent cinema and lost enthusiasm when sound came in.
