Having studied fine arts under Nam June Paik in Duesseldorf at the Acadamy of Arts, Angela Melitopoulos works with electronic media since 1985. Her single-channel-tapes, video installations, video-essays and documentaries have experienced a lot of recognition in international film and video festivals (e.g.Rotterdam Film Festival, Berlinbeta, VideoArt Festival of Locarno, Word Wide Video Festival in Amsterdam) and were exhibited in several museums (e.g.Centre Georges Pompidou Paris, Centro del Arte Contemporania, Kunstmuseum Duesseldorf).
The work of the German-Greek artist engages in narration and memory, migration and mobility. In one of her major works Passing Drama, realised with a DAAD scholarship, she tells the story of migration, that her Greek family had to experience. Her latest project Timescapes was presented at the KW Institut for Contemporary Art in Berlin in 2005/2006.
Besides her artistic career, Angela Melitopoulos publishes theoretical and philosophical texts, a lot of them in collaboration with the sociologist Maurizio Lazzarato, and teaches in different academic institutions.
She is co-founder of the label APRIL in Cologne.
