Thabang Lehobye, is a visual artist. Born 1986 in Soweto and raised in Evaton (Vaal) and Orange Farm. He currently stays in Johannesburg South, were experiments with various stopmotion animations techniques using acrylics and charcoal.
He started his formal art practice at The Artists Proof Studio in 2003 while at school, a community-based print-making center in Newtown, were his love for Joburg as subject in his works started. He Graduated with a National Diploma in Fine Arts from University of Johannesburg and Studied Multimedia at Vega School of Brand Communication. Received Patronage from Johnson and Johnson to further his professional development course at the Artists Proof Studio in 2005. Patronage from the artists William Kentridge as part of professional development and to further his studies in 2008. Thabang has been part of various collaborative exhibitions including a Professional Development Program at Artspace Gallery with Prof. Kim Berman. Passionate about the medium of charcoal, printmaking and animation; His recent charcoal works further explore Joburg inner city as a subject. A constant physical space and its ever-changing inhabitants. The Hillbrow tower as a baton, being passed over and over again. My work intends to share slices and moments-in-time of the city many come to take refuge and make a living one way of the other.
