The Catalan media artist Antoni (or Antonio) Muntadas is considered by some as the father of Spanish net.art, being very aware and concerned on the relations between mass media and art. Obsessed with the media, he has been a forerunner in exploring media communications from an artistic point of view, using photography, video, internet, multi-media installations and publications.

His project File Room, produced in 1994, is a pioneer in the use of the web as instrument of social criticism (in this specific case of censorship) whose feedback is given by its users, the internauts. File Room is an ongoing internet art project that won the Ars Electronica Golden Nica in 1995. The following year Muntadas presented On Translation, a project that discusses, using different formats (including exhibitions and a website), the exchange of information around the world through language and related notions of transcription, interpretation and translation.

Muntadas has worked and lived in New York since the 1970´s and he has been an artist in residence for most of the important centers of art, museums (like MoMA) and galleries in the United States and worldwide in (Canada, Spain and Australia).

Among the grants he received for his multidisciplinary work have come from the Rockefeller Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

His works have been shown at: the Venice Biennale, Documenta VI and X in Kassel, the Lyon Biennale, the Sao Paulo Biennal, the Habana Biennale, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid, Spain), the Ludwig Museum of Budapest (Hungary), the Museu de Arte Moderna de Rio de Janeiro (Brasil), Le Musee d'Art Contemporain de Montreal (Canada), the Capc (Bordeaux, France), the Berkeley Art Museum (California) and the Wexner Arts Center (Columbus, Ohio) among the others.

Among his commissioners we can list: the Centre Nacionale des Artes Plastiques (Paris), the Fonds d'Arts Publiques (Marseille, France) and the Public Art Fund of NY.

He is currently Visiting Professor at MIT Visual Arts Program where he has already been working as Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies during the period 1977-1984.
