New Exhibit: “No Man’s Land” Opens in Reykjavík" A photography and video installation exhibition by Julia Staples and Lana Vogestad, entitled “No Man’s Land,” opened in the Lost Horse Gallery on Vitastígur 9a in central Reykjavík yesterday; during “an evening of art, ice cream and beer.” “No Man's Land” is a term for land that is unoccupied, often due to fear or uncertainty. It is in many cases an area ownership of which is being disputed by two countries or political powers, a press release describes. During war, it is a term used for the area of land between two enemy trenches, a sort of neutral ground that neither side wishes to openly move on or take control of due to threat of the other. |

An Artistic Take on Film History: ICELAND::FILM The traveling exhibition ICELAND::FILM has hit the home country’s shores and is currently on display at The Culture House. It is meant to shed an artistic light on Icelandic film history, presenting the origins of filmmaking in Iceland at the dawn of the 20th century up until last year. The exhibition consists of an oversized film roll mounted on the loft of The Culture House, encircling the exhibition space, displaying screenshots from Icelandic films in a rough chronological order. Screens showing samples from a selection of films along with a headset and written descriptions can be found along the way. Additionally, four “islands” in loud colors are spread across the floor, each representing different genres: feature films, documentary, short films and adaptations of literature. |

Worlds on Video Centre for Contemporary Culture Strozzina - Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence (19/09/08 - 2/11/08): Video Art has become one of the most significant channels of contemporary artistic expression since its first appearance in the 1960s. Its versatility in technical terms makes it a form of art capable both of adopting a stance on social, political and anthropological issues and of conveying vision at a more introspective and personal level. It thus constitutes a fertile terrain for dialogue and the exchange of ideas with other media through a hybrid language stimulating the artists’ imagination and critical thinking. Curated by Anita Beckers, Worlds on Video - International Video Art presents an international overview of what has recently been produced in the field of Video Art by some of its most significant practitioners: Marina Abramovic, Victor Alimpiev, Laura Belem, Candice Breitz, Rä di Martino, Nathalie Djurberg, Kota Ezawa, Harun Farocki, Charlotte Ginsborg, Philippe Grammaticopoulos, Cao Guimarã es, Frank Hesse, Runa Islam, Alfredo Jaar, Jesper Just, Clare Langan, Zhenchen Liu, Domenico Mangano, Jenny Marketou, Bjoern Melhus, Almagul Menlibayeva, Sarah Morris, Guy Ben Ner, Julia Oschatz, Isabel Rocamora, Marinella Senatore, Eve Sussman, Kenneth Tin-Kin Hung, Gillian Wearing, Arnold von Wedemeyer, Clemens von Wedemeyer+Maya Schweizer, Suara Welitoff, Sislej Xhafa, Zimmerfrei. |
