Lawrence Andrews was born in 1964 and lives in San Francisco. He studied photography at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. His work has been exhibited throughout North America and Europe, and he has won numerous awards, including funding from the USA's National Endowment for the Arts.

Andrews creates video collages that comment on the role that violence and racism play in media representation, art making and institutions. He is cross-cutting appropriated TV clips, original footage and text into fragmented narratives, critiquing the media's perpetuation of racist mythologies in an ironic tone. Of particular concern in the works is the way that violence against the black body functions as a perpetual 'turn-on' for dominant culture and the process by which subjects internalize violence through the consumption of media images.
