Born in Austria in 1940; received a degree in textile design from the Technical School for Textile Industry in Vienna in 1964; works include film, video, photography, text and performance; has taught at the Academy of Visual Arts, Munich, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Fine Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute. Currently professor at the Kunsthochschule für Medien in Cologne, Germany.

VALIE EXPORT?s artistic work comprises: video environments, digital photography, installation, body performances, feature films, experimental films, documentaries, Expanded Cinema, conceptual photography, body-material interactions, Persona Performances, laser installations, objects, sculptures, texts on contemporary art history and feminism.
